What is S/MIME and should you implement it?

What is S/MIME

S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions), is a technology that allows you to encrypt your emails. S/MIME uses asymmetric cryptography to protect your emails from unwanted access. It also allows you to digitally sign your emails, verifying the original sender of the message, making it an effective weapon against many phishing attacks out there.

Signing

You can sign your emails using S/MIME to establish that you are an authentic company. Your private key embeds your distinctive digital signature into each email you create and sign. Your public key is used to validate the signature when your recipient opens your email. This guarantees to the recipient that the emails were truly sent by you. Signing emails helps to verify your identity in an era where phishing attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

Encryption

Based on asymmetric cryptography, S/MIME uses a public/private key encryption in order to prevent unwanted access to emails even if the mail account is compromised. The private key cannot be determined computationally from the public key. Senders encrypt the outgoing mail with the recipients public key. Only the accompanying private key can be used to decrypt the email. This ensures you can be certain that only the people you intend to receive your emails will be able to access any sensitive information providing the private key is not compromised.

Conclusion

We strongly advise S/MIME for your firm, given how its advantages can greatly benefit your company in the long run. You should consider using S/MIME if you wish to maintain integrity, uphold privacy, protect sensitive data, and lessen phishing and other forms of email attack.
